Window Observational Research Facility

WORF Patch

WORF Patch

The Window Observational Research Facility (WORF) is one of many scientific equipment racks on the ISS, each with its own specialized function. WORF is installed around the Science Window in the deck of the Destiny module. Always facing the Earth, the Science Window is made of optical quality materials and coatings, which has enabled multiple payloads installed in the WORF to make exceptionally high quality Earth observations. And yes, WORF is spelled the same way as the name of a famous Klingon from the Star Trek series. If you look closely at the WORF mission patch, you can see WORF spelled out in Klingon font!

About that Klingon: Read about how NASA worked with Paramount to secure permission to use the Klingon font on the WORF mission patch, which was applied to the WORF prior to launch and installation on the ISS. To put things another way, since 2010 there has been a spacecraft (the ISS) using Klingon font in orbit around the Earth!

We Can See Clearly Now: See this NASA link for more information about the launch of WORF (ISSAC is shown installed).

Watch detailed YouTube videos, Part 1 and Part 2, about the WORF, its various components and operations as narrated by astronaut Mario Runco. The second part mentions ISSAC.
