What kind of FAA Medical Certificate do I need?
While a Third Class Medical Certificate is required for flight training, students pursuing an academic major that requires an FAA Commercial Certificate will need to acquire and maintain a Second Class Medical Certificate in order to utilize those commercial certificate privileges. Those targeting a career in Part 121 air carrier services will need to acquire a First Class Medical Certificate. It is recommended that those students apply for a First Class Medical Certificate early in their flight training. Air Traffic Management majors will need to acquire the ATC Medical Certification before being hired by the FAA.
What should I do if I have my Private Pilot Certificate before starting at UND?
Although not required, students who wish to obtain their PPL before arriving at UND are welcome to do so. Those that obtain their PPL outside of UND will not take AVIT 102 as their first flight course but instead take AVIT 220 - Enhanced Basic Attitude Instrument Flying as their first flight course at UND. Additionally, if you already have your FAA Private Pilot Certificate (PPL) you are required to submit a copy of your PPL, either the permanent certificate or the unexpired temporary certificate, and your FAA Medical Certificate for verification.
Will I qualify for Restricted-ATP?
Yes, if you complete the Commercial Aviation degree program per our guidelines, you will qualify for an R-ATP at 1,000 flight hours. Other aerospace degree programs will vary.
How much will my program cost me?
Costs are dependent on the major and training required. This is in addition to annual tuition, fees, books and materials, and room/board.
How can I finance my program's training?
Financial Aid
Flight training costs are incorporated into a student's overall cost of education. This means that these costs can be offset by student financial aid. Generally, student loans are the primary source of funding.
Veterans Benefits
Approved veterans are eligible to have flight lab costs covered. To learn about what benefits may apply to you, contact Veterans & Military Services.
Scholarships
Scholarships from the departments within the College of Aerospace Sciences are available to students once enrolled. Approximately $400,000 is available each year.
