
Flight Training Info for New Students
Welcome to the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. We are excited to welcome you to our campus and to the flight training program!
In preparation for your arrival we have compiled a comprehensive list of things you need so that you are ready to go the moment the semester begins. Please look through this page at your earliest convenience so that you know what to expect both prior and upon arriving at UND.
Required Items
Here is a list of items you will need for flight training. All items can be purchased upon arriving at UND; however, most items can be purchased ahead of time if you choose to do so.
- aviation headset with dual plug (email pubs@aero.und.edu)
- iPad Mini, iPad, 11-inch iPad Air, or the 11-inch iPad Pro (the new 13-inch iPad Air and iPad Pro, and the previous generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro are not authorized for use during flight training due to the size of the device)
- iPad compatible kneeboard
- UND edition ForeFlight subscription*
- UND Piper Archer Checklist (must be purchased upon arriving at UND)
- logbook
- lanyard with an ID holder
- dual-colored (white/red) flashlight**
- view-limiting device such as foggles or a view-limiting hood**
- dedicated flight bag to contain all of the above items
* The UND edition ForeFlight subscription must be purchased from UND over email or in-person. All of the required aircraft manufacturer and UND Flight Operations publications are included in the UND edition ForeFlight subscription, not the regular ForeFlight subscription. Do not purchase a ForeFlight subscription from ForeFlight. If you already have a ForeFlight subscription please email pubs@aero.UND.edu for information on how to set up the UND edition ForeFlight subscription. You are encouraged to email pubs@aero.UND.edu to create your UND edition ForeFlight account prior to your arrival at UND; however, you also have the option to set it up in-person while visiting Aviator's Corner. Students starting in the fall of 2026 can request a subscription after July 15, 2026.

Aviator's Corner, formerly called the Airport Bookstore, is located on the 2nd floor of the Aviation Maintenance building at the airport, and carries a variety of aviation supplies. All purchases made at Aviator's Corner will be billed to your Aviation Flight Account.
Preflight Checklist - Items to Complete Prior to the Semester
To help you stay on track in preparing for the semester you must complete the following steps on your own before arriving at UND. More information is available at the links.
- obtain an FAA Medical Certificate
- create an IACRA account and submit an application for a Student Pilot Certificate
- create an AIMS account and enter your contact information
- deposit money for flight training into your Aviation Flight Account
- print and complete the UND Ramp Badge application
- bring your passport or Birth Certificate (original with the raised seal), as you will need it for the next step upon arriving at UND
- for non-US citizens, the TSA requires additional steps to be completed prior to starting flight training
Start Checklist - First Trip to the Airport with your Certified Flight Instructor
Before you actively begin flight training you must bring the following items to the airport to complete your flight lab enrollment and TSA approval to begin flight training. This is usually the first time you will meet your assigned Certified Flight Instructor. For most students this will also be the first trip to the airport aside from tours.
- FAA Medical Certificate
- Passport or Birth Certificate (original with the raised seal)
- valid Driver's License or Government-Issued Photo ID
- IACRA FTN, username, and password
- completed Ramp Badge application
- iPad with the UND edition ForeFlight subscription*
- logbook
* You can obtain your UND edition ForeFlight subscription by emailing pubs@aero.UND.edu or in-person at Aviator's Corner when you meet your Certified Flight Instructor for the first time
Your First Flight Course at UND
Students in programs that have airplane flight training will start their flight training at UND in either AVIT 102 or AVIT 220. See the Your First Flight Course page for information on which course you start your flight training in.
Students in programs that have helicopter flight training will begin their flight training in AVIT 142/143.

The recording of the webinar with specific Aerospace questions was emailed to all incoming Aviation students.
If I already have my Private Pilot Certificate, do I still need to take AVIT 102?
Most UND students obtain their private pilot certificate through UND. If you already have your private pilot certificate, you may be eligible to start your flight training in AVIT 220 instead of AVIT 102. Please see Your First Flight Course for information on how to start in AVIT 220.
How do I sign up for an orientation date (online or on-campus)?
Registration and information for on-campus dates, and the online orientation, are found on the Orientation Programs webpage.
When do classes start? When does the winter break begin?

Where can I find the courses required for my major?

Who should I talk to if I want to explore other majors, minors, and certificates?
Visit the Aerospace Success Center to speak with an academic advisor.
Where can I find my required textbooks for non-flying courses?
Textbook information can be found at the UND Bookstore.
Do I need to take Math Placement Assessment? Will my AP/ACT/SAT scores cover that requirement?

Where do I purchase a parking permit or find which lots are available for me?
